What do you do, and why do you do it?
I am a dancer and an artist. The types of art I do are oil pastel, acrylic paint, and charcoal drawing. The types of dance I do are: jazz, hip hop, ballet, lyrical and jazz funk. I do these forms of art because it helps me express myself to the world through movement of my body, and movement of my pencil just by sharing a metaphoric picture.
How did you get started?
I was constantly moving around as a baby so my mom put me in dance. I started at 3 years old and for 7 years now I’ve been attached to it. I am now on the elite company team at Kemper Dance Academy.
What artwork are you most proud of and why?
Although I am proud of all my art pieces, the one I am most proud of is my purple oil pastel flower that won me first place and an art scholarship. I used only oil pastels and glue.
What is the best advice you have been given about your creativity?
The best advice I have ever been given would be when one of my dance teachers told me, “always dance for yourself, not anybody else.”
How has your family helped you grow in your creativity?
My family has helped me grow in my creativity by constantly encouraging and supporting me no matter what. My Uncle was a hip hop dancer and that inspires me. My mom reminds me to work hard and my aunts, uncles, grandparents, and cousins remind me to stay positive, no matter how hard things may get.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
When I grow up I have two things I want to be, although I’m not sure yet which one I will decide on. I want to be a psychologist working for the FBI or I want to own my own dance studio.
What is you favorite type of creative expression, dance or painting? And why?
Dance is my favorite form of creative expression. This is because it allows me to explore different cultures, views and passions in myself both physically and mentally.
