Capoeira is more than a martial art. It combines martial arts, instrument playing, singing and so, unlike other martial arts, its practice is communal rather than solitary. Being good at capoeira requires the individual to exist harmoniously within a community of practitioners. Historically, it originated among the African communities in Brazil during their enslavement. Capoeira gave the enslaved Africans of Brazil a means to resist (physically, mentally, and spiritually) the oppressive system of slavery. Consequently, there is much capoeira can teach and offer people who feel bogged down by the pressure of work, industrialization, technology, etc.
